Brumby Nobbles VEAC as Report Reveals Labor's Neglect
Monday, June 28, 2010
John Brumby is moving to nobble another independent body which today released a report showing Victoria’s native animals and plants and our precious environment are under threat after eleven years of Labor neglect, inaction and mismanagement. “After today’s report by the Victorian Environmental Assessment Council (VEAC) revealed Labor’s failure on the environment, it’s no wonder that John Brumby is trying to silence VEAC,” Shadow Minister for the Environment Mary Wooldridge said today. “John Brumby’s decision to axe VEAC is consistent with his track record of abusing, bullying and intimidating anyone who criticises his government and its myriad failures. “Victoria faces a biodiversity crisis and under John Brumby our natural environment is suffering from shameful neglect, with more than 40 per cent of plants and 30 percent of native animals either extinct or threatened. “One-third of Victoria major streams are in poor or very poor condition and two-thirds of Victoria’s wetlands have been lost or degraded. ”Labor cannot manage public land and our forests, reserves and parks are choked with noxious weeds, swarming with feral animals and under threat from fire because of a lack of fuel reduction burning. “Yet instead of listening to VEAC and admitting his failure, John Brumby has moved to abolish the independent body. “John Brumby has already sacked the independent Mining Warden and undermined the Victorian Ombudsman. “Victorians want real action on the environment, not more abuse, bullying and intimidation from John Brumby,” Ms Wooldridge said.
