Real action needed to support Brumby's Green Jobs Plan

Friday, April 30, 2010

Shadow Minister for Environment and Climate Change Mary Wooldridge today said the Brumby Government’s Jobs for the Future Economy report was a step in the right direction but warned the Coalition will monitor its implementation closely.

"A green jobs strategy if properly implemented will secure jobs, skills and innovation for Victoria, but all Victorians know that John Brumby and his ministers excel in photo opportunities and media stunts but fail badly on effective implementation," Ms Wooldridge said.

"The Coalition will closely monitor the roll-out of Labor’s latest strategy to ensure that today’s announcement is not yet another addition to the Brumby Government’s endless list of empty announcements.

"Victoria has a comparative advantage with already-established green technologies and business, yet the Brumby Government has been slow to build on this base to create jobs and business opportunities.

"Key details are missing from this latest announcement – for example, the Brumby Government has failed to outline how it will secure the future of the Latrobe Valley, which will be significantly affected by State and Federal Government decisions to reduce greenhouse emissions.

"Today’s long-overdue report shows John Brumby has failed again to provide people in the Latrobe Valley with a climate change transition plan that promotes jobs and industries for the future.

"Victorians are also still waiting for the Government’s much-touted Climate Change White Paper and Climate Change legislation which was promised almost four years ago.

"The longer Labor delays the release of its climate change agenda, the harder it is for Victorian businesses and communities to plan for their future," Ms Wooldridge said.
