Doncaster residents want improvements in public transport, police, water security

Wednesday, April 21, 2010

Doncaster residents are frustrated with lacking public transport options, concerned about street violence, hoon driving and also unsure about Melbourne’s future water supply, said Mary Wooldridge the Member for Doncaster today.

A recent survey conducted by Ms Wooldridge has shown that these are the top three issues which concern residents in her electorate.

Ms Wooldridge said, "The response to the survey has been very informative, particularly due the level of detail and effort respondents have gone to. It has been great to hear the opinions of the people who are directly affected by the decisions of Government and I would like to personally thank everyone who has participated."

Survey respondents listed, among many frustrations with Victoria’s public transport system, the need for improved and additional public transport services between Doncaster and Melbourne’s CBD.

Alan of Doncaster said, "I’m a professional working in the CBD and I love Doncaster, but Doncaster will lose me if there are not more regular options to get me home after say, 8.30pm."

Many people who completed the survey also nominated regular traffic congestion at Hoddle St. as a key transport issue that they want addressed.

Law and Order also featured as a prominent concern among people surveyed.

"We need more police on the streets to crack down on hoons, graffiti and anti-social behaviour," said Mat of Doncaster East.

Many Doncaster residents also expressed dissatisfaction with sentencing in Victoria, indicating they believe that the penalty for crime has become far too lenient under Rob Hulls.

Melbourne’s water security was also raised by many survey respondents as an issue which they felt deserved more attention from Government.

"Doncaster is a beautiful area," Ms Wooldridge said. "There are many parks, gardens and areas such as the Mullum Mullum Creek Reserve which are a constant reminder to locals of how important Melbourne’s water supply is to our local environment."

Survey results also showed that people in Doncaster are also concerned about the delivery of health and hospital services and many feel disillusioned with the town planning process.

Ms Wooldridge said, "This survey shows that Doncaster residents are concerned about a mix of local and state-wide issues. The State Government has had over $300m in revenue and a decade in office to listen to these concerns and act on them."

"The Doncaster survey is more evidence which shows how Victorians are feeling and will enable me, as the local Member, to effectively advocate for the needs of the community here in Doncaster."
