The Victorian Liberal Nationals Coalition today exposed the Brumby Labor Government’s Super Nannies announcement as a sham that duplicates an existing program which was introduced 15 years ago under the previous Coalition Government, Shadow Minister for Community Services Mary Wooldridge said today.
When asked in Parliament today, the Minister for Community Services was at a loss to explain the difference between the existing Families First program and her ‘new’ Super Nannies announcement of 17 January 2010.
"It is clear that having run out of ideas of his own, John Brumby is now deceiving Victorians by recycling existing programs as ‘new’ initiatives," Ms Wooldridge said.
The Families First initiative, established in 1995, provides intensive one-on-one parenting and family support for families in crisis. Similarly, Labor’s Super Nannies announcement offers intensive one-on-one support for families struggling to cope. Both work intensively in the early stages and can maintain contact with families for up to a year.
"The Brumby Government not only misled Victorians by claiming a long-standing program was ‘new’, but it is so tired and out of touch it plagiarised the program’s title from a popular TV show," Ms Wooldridge said.
"While providing additional highly-skilled support for families at times of crisis can be greatly beneficial, Labor’s Super Nannies announcement was nothing but a cheap PR stunt to disguise Labor’s lack of ideas.
"Once again, the Brumby Labor Government has proven it cannot be trusted to protect vulnerable children and families," Ms Wooldridge said.
