Vic Coalition Supports Apology to Forgotten Australians

Monday 16 November 2009

The Victorian Liberal Nationals Coalition welcomes the Federal Parliament’s apology today to former wards of the state and child migrants.

In 2006 the Victorian Parliament united to recognise the impact of institutional care on many of our children, and apologise for the abuse and neglect that many children experienced while under the care of this state.

Today marks an important step towards national recognition of the individuals and families who have suffered as a result of shameful past practices in out-of-home care.

There is no denying the cruelty and abuse experienced by many Victorian children in institutional care and the suffering that many have continued to endure later in life because of this appalling mistreatment.

We must recognise and apologise to the families that have been torn apart, to the children who have been victims of abuse and neglect and for the ongoing torment that many continue to endure.

While there is no excuse for the physical and emotional pain suffered by children in

out-of-home care, we can ensure that children in care today and in the future will be protected and given every opportunity to lead happy and healthy lives.
