Residents Win Community Campaign for Safer Road Crossing

A four year campaign by local residents for elderly Donvale residents to safely cross busy Mitcham Road has been successful, says the Member for Doncaster, Mary Wooldridge.
VicRoads recently installed a pedestrian walkway in the median strip outside the Greenview Retirement Village.
The campaign for the walkway was strongly supported by Mary. During the 2006 election campaign the Liberal Party pledged the funding to install the crossing.
The new median walkway allows residents of Greenview, Pinetree Retirement Village and those using the Donvale Reserve to cross halfway and safely wait for traffic to pass before walking across to the other side.
The campaign was instituted by Greenview resident Mr John Treverton, who argued many elderly residents wanted to use the park. But without a pedestrian walkway in the median strip they were forced to walk to traffic lights further along the road, taking them 15-20 minutes simply to get across the road.
Mr Treverton campaigned to the council and VicRoads, organised a petition and even put the residents’ case to the Minister for Roads when he visited Doncaster.
“I’m delighted that working together we have been able to get the median strip built for residents,” Ms Wooldridge said.
“This is a small project but one of great importance to our older citizens living in this area. The increased access to the park will help them keep active and enjoy the nearby outdoor facilities.
“According to VicHealth physical activity is second (after tobacco control) as the most important factor in health promotion and disease prevention in Australia and I support initiatives which encourage residents to keep healthy.
“I congratulate Mr Treverton for his determination in raising and pursuing this issue,” she said.
